Leg Veins
As we get older, we lose some of the healthy coloring in our legs and our skin takes on a more transparent look. But you can help to fight this! Whether you find red and blue veins appearing on your legs, we can help those annoying lines disappear. Put on your short shorts and swimwear without feeling embarrassed.

What causes veins to appear?
Large varicose veins and unsightly spider veins can affect both men and women, although it is far more likely for women to suffer from these irritating symptoms. Usually varicose veins and spider veins are the result of genetic inheritance, but other factors can also increase your risk. These veins can worsen from being overweight, after giving birth, frequently standing for prolonged periods of time (at work), performing high impact exercise, or for now discernible reason at all. Research also shows that hormone fluctuations can also influence the appearance of spider veins and varicose veins. This means factors such as puberty, pregnancy, menopause, menstruation, taking oral contraceptives, or taking hormone replacement therapy can all be a cause of veins' unsightly appearances and a major reason why it is more common for women to suffer from the appearance of veins.

Additionally, a leg injury or broken bone can also cause veins to appear. Spider veins that affect the facial area are usually inherited genetically and can impact both men and women. Facial spider veins can also be the result of alcohol consumption, extended exposure to the sun, and/or from certain skin conditions such as rosacea.

How do I prevent spider and/or varicose veins?
Although you can't fight genetics, a major cause of spider veins and varicose veins, there are certain things you can do to lower your risk from other factors. Protecting yourself from sun exposure is an important way to fight vein appearances on the face and neck, as well as a number of other skin complications. Getting good vascular circulation in your legs can help reduce the risk- try exercising regularly with low-impact exercises and activity, such as walking or cycling. Staying at a healthy weight will help control and reduce the amount of pressure exerted on your leg veins. Wearing proper footwear can also prevent spider veins and varicose veins- wear low high heels, appropriate athletic shoes, arch support if necessary, or even therapeutic stockings can help some women reduce their risk. During pregnancy, stocking support can be very helpful since you will be exerted extra weight on your legs during this time.

What is the best treatment for varicose veins?
Your dermatologist can help you to determine the best treatment for you. The first step will be to examine the veins in question and to consult about any other medical or skin conditions that you might be experiencing. In most cases, an individualize treatment approach is the best way to treat spider veins and varicose veins. There are several treatment options available. The first is known as sclerotherapy- a medical injection into the troublesome vein. Phototherapy uses pulsed laser lights to reduce the vein. Lastly, there are micro-surgery procedures that can help to eliminate the problem vein without any scarring or stitches. All the treatments are safe and effective.

"I was really embarrassed when I started to experience acne problems when I was pushing 30. I struggled with acne in high school, but I thought those irritating and awful problems were behind me. The Blaine clinic helped me learn more about the causes behind adult acne and what kind of treatment I could use to keep it under control. Their treatments have been phenomenal and I'm really glad that I don't have to deal with hiding my face anymore!"
